The benefits of loyal friendship..
Was reading from 1 Samuel 18:1, 3-4 of how Jonathan loved David with his own soul.
V4 - “And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.”
Ever wondered what true and loyal friendship is? It is giving myself to the person, staying through with the person amidst the storms in our lives even to the depth of laying down one’s life for a friend.
That was what Jonathan did for David. Notice the part that says in 1 Sam 18:1 - “As soon as he had finished speaking with Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of Davie, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.” Such great loyalty! Their friendship shows the essence of loyalty even when external circumstances obstructed them.
David at that point was going through a hard time running away from Saul, King of Israel then. I am pretty sure David had a yearning for deep friendships, with someone he could trust deeply. If it hasn’t been for Jonathan who gave himself to lift David up, David could have struggled a lot more than where the passage ends.
As I look over the past year, Joseph and I have been meeting up every week for accountability. There are times we couldn’t meet due to busyness but that’s when we feel the need to meet up even more.
Each week I spend with Jo gives me motivation to go on in my walk with God and ministry specifically. I thank God for Jo. I remember we started out meeting with him teaching me some Maths in school and he started sharing some deep parts of his life. That was when we connected, however it took commitment to meet up regularly.
I remember the times we worship God together just us alone. When we share deep secrets with one another that no one else knew besides God ;) Those are great times that we are still going through even today. Thank you Lord for such a dear friend!
p.s. I would love to see more and more young adults and youths having loyal friendships ![]()
